No matter how effective exercise and home safety programmes
are, it is impossible to prevent all falls. Even if
the fall does not result in direct injury the faller
may find it difficult or impossible to get themselves
back onto their feet. Those who have fallen and sustained
injury will be in an even poorer state to get help.
A lie of more than 12 hours is associated with a bad
outcome and around half of fallers require help to get
up after at least one fall. Risks include:
- Pain
- Haemorrhage leading to shock
- Orthostatic pneumonia
- Hypothermia
- Dehydration
- Pressure sores
It is therefore vital that fallers are able
to get speedy assistance. They may therefore need
devices which can then be used to call assistance if
there is no suitable co-habitee. If the co-habitee is
frail themselves a static call device may be a suitable
alternative where assistance can be summoned at the
press of a single strategically located button. The
assistance may come from a warden, home care worker or family
member but more frequently will be an operator or triage
nurse in a telephone call centre.
